Highly Narrative Hip Hop
Street Meets Soul • Blues-Infused Hip Hop
Recording artist, founder of Your Favorite Monster LLC (record label), scientist & environmental justice advocate.
A lover of the smell of moss, back seam stockings, street art, and other ephemeral things, Aela Hopeful Monster is the moniker of Chicana artist, scientist, and environmental justice advocate Micaela (Aela) Martinez. Through blues-infused hip hop, visual art, and storytelling, her work explores love, reimagining, beauty, and our connection to place. Her albums include Lovesick, Storybook, Confessional Poetry, and Neo G-Funk.
Also known as the Sylvia Plath of rap, for her highly narrative and personal form of writing, Aela experiments with different styles of soul-, blues-, and jazz-infused hip hop, sampled loops, and Cali G-funk. She has collaborated with producers from around the world including TooBusy (Switzerland), Nicholas Craven (Canada), Camoflauge Monk (Buffalo, NY), and Mofak (France).
Influenced by the works of Sam Cooke, Westside Gunn, and Yoko Ono.
Daydream, inspired by the life and works of Yoko Ono, showcases Aela’s multicultural/international collaborations. Produced by Swiss producer TooBusy and filmed by Belgian filmmaker Kwervo Films in the heart of Mexico City, this video utilizes natural light, sky, and shadow to bring the viewer a sense of reverie and awe. Graphic design by the Mexican designer Remedio Visuals, and mix & master by Texas-based sound engineer Kadin Yeahmon, all long-time collaborators. The work also includes an off the record interview with Yoko Ono, 1987-10-07 from the Joe Smith Collection at the Library of Congress (Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division), and a soundscape from Rocky Mountain National Park Sound Library, recorded by J. Job. Video & music copyright 2026 Your Favorite Monster LLC. Visit the Aela Hopeful Monster YouTube channel for her full film catalog (Link).
